Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
on Fox
Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a
5th Grader?, airing on Fridays, at 8:00 p.m. ET remains a
perennial favorite as Best TV Show of the Week. Hosted by the
light-hearted Jeff Foxworthy, the September 11th episode proved that
the “dumb blonde” is a false stereotype when weight loss consultant Marlies
Pinto handily won $300,000. Easily handling such questions as, “Is the leopard a
member of the cat family?”, “On a musical scale, what note is two steps higher
than F?” and “In order for iron to rust, it must be exposed to both water and
what element?”, Marlies encountered difficulty with the question “What organ in
the human body produces and secretes bile?” Answering “the stomach,” Marlies was
on the edge of losing all the money she had won. Luckily, 5th grader
Olivia saved her by getting the correct answer, thus winning Marlies $300,000.
Not knowing “who was elected president of the Confederate States during the
Civil War,” Marlies dropped out of the game, keeping her $300,000…in this case a
wise decision, as her student companion also did not know the correct answer.
Combining the
question-and-answer format of such long-standing game shows as Jeopardy! with
humorous banter by comedian Jeff Foxworthy, and delightfully allowing school
children to play a major – and sometimes, game-saving – role in the program,
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
Is one of the Fox network’s
only family-friendly programs. By combining the spirit of competition with basic
knowledge and the presence of children, the show is a fun way that both parents
and kids can enjoy watching TV together…and maybe even learn something in the
bargain.
Answers: “yes,” “A,” “oxygen,”
“the liver” and “Jefferson Davis.”
