Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on ABC

By Ally Matteodo

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition again outpaces the rest of the television program pack this week.  Airing at 8:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, January 3rd, this episode focuses on the amazing Morris family of St. Paul, Minnesota.  Sandy Morris, a single mother of two, worked as a teacher until her dissatisfaction with area daycare spurred her to open up her own day care center, complete with bilingual education.  Several of the families who depend on Sandy to watch their children gave their testimony on this incredible lady.  One mother described how her husband suffered from a collapsed lung and awaited a transplant, and how Sandy insisted they not worry about paying for daycare.  Chris Coleman, the mayor of Saint Paul himself, nominated Sandy for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, singing her praises as a mentor and teacher.  In an ideal world, Coleman explains that Sandy would be able to care for all of the children across Saint Paul, because she’s just that wonderful.  Unfortunately, the Morris family’s 100-year-old house is crumbling to the ground, and without help Sandy would be forced to close her daycare.

This season’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition series revolves around the theme of volunteerism, and this week’s celebrity guest volunteers were the Muppets.  The Muppets make the perfect addition to the team of designers, especially since they are adored by children, and reconstructing the daycare and providing for these children is one of the main goals of this week’s renovation.  Ty Pennington and his team get to work as the Morris family is whisked off on a Disney cruise to the Caribbean, where Sandy and her two children Catricia and Michael spend some quality time together.  The thought and care that go into these renovations will continually astound viewers of this program.  One of the most important aspects of the new house is the separation of the daycare from the home of the family.  Before, the house doubled as the daycare, and there was no separation between work and home. Ty and his team remedy this by providing the Morris family with more space.  Now, the dining room table doesn’t double as an arts and crafts table and as a diaper-changing table; it’s a place where mother and children can sit and catch up while eating a meal together.  Indeed, the spirit of generosity infects everyone, as all the volunteers who helped rebuild the Morris home receive a free pass to one of the Disney parks for a day.  As a new year awaits us, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition sets the perfect tone.  Not only does this program celebrate kind, sweet, giving individuals, it also eradicates the old and decrepit and replaces it with the new and innovative.  In this manner, it readily assists families in entering a brighter, better future.
