Desperate Housewives on ABC

Ratings for Desperate Housewives (Sundays, 9:00 p.m. ET) have been falling.  Perhaps producers for the show are getting a little desperate themselves, given the increasingly bizarre storylines involving Katherine, played by Dana Delaney.  So far this season, she’s been a stalker and a psycho – now add lesbian to the list, as her racy fantasy became a reality on the February 28th episode.  The show’s explicit sexual content earned it the title of Worst TV Show of the Week.

The series’ omniscient narrator introduces Katherine’s storyline by stating, “Seduction, any soap opera fan will tell you, is an art best practiced on those who are vulnerable.”  The vulnerable person in this scenario is Katherine – alone, divorced from Mike, recovering from a psychotic episode, and, as it so happens, housing an ex-stripper who Susan (played by Teri Hatcher) had convinced to leave the profession but later kicked out of her house because her husband was getting too close to her.  Thus, the ingredients for a sordid lesbian subplot are all there: a lonely vulnerable woman and a sultry ex-stripper.

In the opening scene, Robin descends down the stairs wearing nothing but bra and panties and a silk robe.  Meanwhile, Katherine has cooked a luscious breakfast of cinnamon brioche French toast.  “Seriously?  You heated the syrup?  You’re unbelievable!” Robin coos as Katherine pours it onto her plate.  “You should eat it while it’s still…hot,” Katherine stammers, as Robin seductively stretches.  Robin takes a big bite and spills syrup on what little clothes she has on.  “Oh, no, look.  I just got syrup all over me.”  Robin stands up and removes her robe.  “I don’t know what it is with me.  I just have to get dirty.”  Katherine points out that Robin spilled some on her bra as well.  Robin repeatedly wipes her bra with her finger and licks it (basically rubbing her own breast).  Katherine is overcome with passion.  She strides over to Robin and runs her hands along her abdomen and back.  Her fingers reach Robin’s bra straps as she whispers, “I’ll get it.”  The scene immediately cuts to Katherine popping out of bed.  It was all a dream…

That is, until the final scene of the episode, when Robin brings home a bottle of champagne to celebrate the new job she landed.  She manages to drench her blouse in champagne as the cork pops.  She removes her top and exposes her bra underneath.  Katherine can no longer contain her feelings and confesses that she is attracted to Robin.  Initially, Katherine asks Robin to move out, but moments later Katherine enters Robin’s room and the pair is shown in bed together the following morning.

As is often the case for the ladies of Wisteria Lane, reality isn’t too far removed from fantasy.  For this particular episode, the combined sexual content of both should have warranted a TV-14 rating instead of the TV-PG rating the show was given, thus earning it the title of Worst TV Show of the Week.
