90210 on CW

The PTC understands that 90210 (Mondays, 8:00 p.m.ET) is a soap opera -- but the program’s current content is enough to cause one to exclaim: come on! Here is a short listing of the current storylines:

  • Dixon thought he was HIV positive, but turns out he’s not, but he broke up with Ivy just in case he was;
  • Ivy slept with her randy childhood friend, Oscar, the same night Dixon broke up with her;
  • Oscar was also sleeping with Ivy’s mom in a convoluted, multi-generational revenge-sex subplot;
  • Naomi decides to press charges against Mr. Canon, the teacher whom she falsely accused of sexual harassment, and then who subsequently raped her;
  • Teddy refuses to accept the fact that he’s gay, and now rumors are starting to spread that he’s impotent because he tried hooking up with a girl, but couldn’t achieve an erection;
  • Adrianna wants to dump her skeevy manager after he forces her to look slutty for a photoshoot, but decides to stick with him once she lands the cover of a magazine;
  • Adrianna’s boyfriend Navid recognizes the new girl at school from one of the porn movies that his father has produced, and realizes that his dad used an underage girl.

Phew! That’s a lot going on. Too bad so much of it is inappropriate for the young audience to which the show caters. For its sex-soaked content in the November 1st episode, 90210 has been named the Worst TV Show of the Week.

At the beginning of the episode, Navid welcomes his new locker neighbor, a girl who has just transferred to West Bev. She’s bright and bubbly at first when Navid mentions that she looks familiar, but she instantly blanches as soon as he says his name. Nearby, Teddy feels  eyes on him as he walks through the halls. Dixon divulges that the last girl Teddy hooked up with has started a rumor:

“She said you guys hooked up and that you were shooting pool with a rope,” Dixon tells Teddy.

“Unbelievable, man. She’s just pissed because I rejected her,” Teddy replies.

Unbeknownst everyone except Ian (the guy Teddy slept with), Teddy is actually gay.

Meanwhile, Dixon tries to patch things up with Ivy now that he knows he doesn’t have the HIV virus. But she Ivy has a secret of her own that she’s keeping. Eventually she confesses that she slept with Oscar.

Oscar, newly infatuated with Naomi, notices that Mr. Canon’s British accent is from a different part of England than Canon claims to be. Later, when Naomi and Oscar search the web for “teacher sex offenders in Dagenham” (the area Canon is actually from), they discover an article with his picture and the headline, “Teacher Suspended on Allegations of Rape.”

Teddy, still grappling with his sexuality, turns to drugs to help cope with his confusion. He smokes marijuana and gets behind the wheel of his car with Dixon and Navid as his passengers.

By the end of the episode, after seeing Caitlin (the new girl) grind against a guy on the dance floor, Navid places her. He takes out his smartphone and shows Silver a snippet from a porn flick. Caitlin is shown dressed in a skimpy mini-skirt as a policeman writes her a speeding ticket. She saunters over to the officer and says, “I know I was speeding. Is there any way I can dance my way out of this ticket?” She begins to dance seductively around him.

Silver agrees that Caitlin is the same girl in the film and tells Navid, “Congratulations. You're a true porn connoisseur.”

“It was a long summer,” Navid explains, “Ade was out of town, so yeah, I snuck into my dad's office and uploaded a few movies.”

“No explanations necessary. It's okay.”

“No, it's not okay, Silver. Don't you get it? That girl Caitlin is a junior, which means my dad put an underage girl in his movie.”

Undoubtedly, the porn actress plot will play out in the coming weeks. And whereas Teddy’s sexuality and Naomi’s rape have been dealt with somewhat sensitively, Caitlin’s drama appears blatantly salacious and only adds to the sense that 90210 cares less about addressing tough issues than about exploiting them.

In an age where young people are constantly being hyper-sexualized, 90210 has been doing its fair share to further the trend. The sheer breadth and scope of its sexually-charged storylines have earned 90210 the title of Worst TV Show of the Week.
