The Princess Diaries 2: Royal
Engagement

MPAA Rating: G
Beloved Mia (Anne Hathaway), Princess of Genovia, is trying
her best to adjust to her new, royal life at the Genovian Palace with her
grandmother, Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews). As a spunky, 21-year-old
American, Mia doesn't quite fit the "heiress to the throne" mold. Her
distaste for curtseying servants and proper princess etiquette are only a
few of her contemporary characteristics that stick out like a sore thumb in
the royal circles she now must frequent. While the media is having a
hey-day exposing all of her faux pas, the conservative folks in parliament
are looking for ways to oust her.
Only a few days into her stay at the palace, Mia finds out
that a centuries-old law compels her to marry within thirty days or give up
her right to the crown. To make matters worse, one scheming member of
parliament, Viscount Mabrey (John Rhys-Davies) has his nephew, Nicholas
Devereaux (Chris Pine), lined up to take over the crown… and Mia finds this
nephew's charm irresistible. Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement
takes us along Mia's bumpy ride to coronation as she seeks a suitor and
tries to fend off the ill-intentioned Viscount Mabrey and Nicholas Devereaux.
This film is packed with the charm of lead actress Anne
Hathaway as she portrays the clumsy but cheerful and always well-intentioned
Mia. Julie Andrews also works well again in this sequel as the dignified
and poised Queen/compassionate and stylish grandmother. The film has no
vulgar language or violence. As a G-rated film, Princess Diaries 2:
Royal Engagement does a good job with added romantic elements (a few
mild kissing scenes) and addressing tough dilemmas. Mia must make many
important choices both as a developing young woman and as a soon-to-be
Queen. In the end, the message to young (and old) people is to let
important decisions come from your heart.
Overall, Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement will be
a joy to watch for both adults and children alike. Kids will love the
"fairy-tale" elements as well as many of the funny situations Mia gets
herself into. Mia also acts as a wonderful role model - she's a beautiful and
mature young woman who has a flare for modern style but who doesn't
sacrifice her dignity. Adults will love the endearing characters and many
of the touching moments that remind us all to appreciate, nurture, and love
our children.
