Boulder
Buddies: Adventures in Learning
By Kimberly Sielen
Release Date: ?
MPAA Rating:
Unrated
Genre: Animated Educational Film
Boulder Buddies is a fun, entertaining, and educational film directed
towards children who have not yet entered elementary school. Focusing on
concepts like the alphabet, numbers, and shapes, it encourages children to learn
through songs and interactive dialogue that speaks directly to them.
In honor of Roost's promotion to "Senior Sales Guy" for all of his hard work, he
invites us—the viewer—to take a journey with him through Boulderville. There we
meet his friends Punky Rock, Matey, and Braid. They travel with him to different
areas with names like "Land of the Alphabet" to learn about different elementary
concepts. For example, in this land, we are introduced to the alphabet and learn
what each letter sounds and looks like. Then, when the alphabet is blown away at
the end of the lesson, the viewer is invited to hunt for the letters with the
Boulder Buddies throughout the rest of the film. Therefore, even while learning
about other things, like numbers, the original concept is being reinforced.
Similar methods are used in the film for numbers, shapes, and colors.
Boulder Buddies also presents a wide range of positive social behaviors for
children, ranging from the importance of eating breakfast to the necessity of
picking up trash. The most prominent message, repeated throughout the film
through song and dialogue, is to listen to and obey your parents. Other positive
behaviors include taking turns, exercising for fun, and that working hard leads
to good results.
At the end, the songs from the film are presented in music video form. Each song
is about a specific topic already learned including listening to your parents,
the alphabet, and numbers, among others. This is yet another tool provided in
Boulder Buddies to promote learning.
Overall, Boulder Buddies is completely kid friendly and a welcome
alternative to much of today's programming for children. By replacing
objectionable (and non-educational) material with positive lessons and values,
children will find themselves counting and singing about the alphabet.
