Mr.
Magorium not only owns a Wonder Emporium, filled with colorful and magical toys,
but he touches the lives of everyone around him. He has lived for over 200 years
and has had many wonderful experiences. However, he reveals that his time in
this world is running out. Before he goes, he seeks to pass the store on to
Molly Mahoney as well as help three of his closest friends find true happiness.
The story
features characters that face challenges, but learn to overcome them. Molly
Mahoney struggles to compose her own piano concerto and make her mark on the
world. Henry Weston, the new accountant, refuses to accept the magic of the
Emporium as well as life. Eric Applebaum, a kid who collects hats, is content
with playing on his own and doesn’t really try to make friends. Throughout the
film, each character faces those things that are holding them back in life, and
by overcoming them, become happier people.
Parents should
be aware that there is an element of death in the film. Magorium rarely
discusses it directly, alluding to it in such terms as “departing” this world
and “going to heaven.” However, this element plays a significant part of the
plot near the conclusion of the film.
Offensive
content is almost non-existent. There is one scene where a toy rocket tries to
lift off and fails, and it utters “oh, crap.” Magorium also calls a zebra
“stupid.” In addition, there is one scene of a child behaving badly by stomping
down on Henry’s foot.
The inspiring
story, bright colors, and magical atmosphere help make Mr. Magorium’s Wonder
Emporium a safe and enjoyable family film.
