Violence: Mostly limited to verbal bullying except in one instance when Bobby gets into a fight with Tommy the bully. Tommy calls him a “crybaby” and Bobby punches him in the mouth. Tommy says, “your dead, watch your back” after he gets in trouble from the principal.

Note to Parents:

  • Death is implied, but not depicted verbally or visually.

  • Bobby’s mentor, Jim, delicately explains the acronyms “MIA” and “KIA” when Bobby sees a picture of Jim’s Vietnam buddies on the mantle.

  • Bobby lies to his uncle and aunt telling them he is at baseball practice every day, while instead he is building a soapbox car with Jim. When he is caught, he is grounded for and he apologizes for lying.

You’ve Got a Friend is an original Hallmark movie, starring John Schneider, set in the year 1976. It tells the story of twelve-year-old Bobby Graham and his struggle after his parents are killed in an automobile accident and he is sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Eagle Rock. He strives to fulfill his dream of building a soapbox racecar, while confronting obstacles posed by his new school and home life. Positive moral values are emphasized in a way that parents and children can both enjoy and the movie is entertaining for all ages.
