Set in the late
18th century, Amazing Grace tells the story of Member of
Parliament William Wilberforce, as he fights for the abolition of slavery
throughout the British Empire. Despite his bills to Parliament being repeatedly
voted down, he battles the culture and prejudices of his day. Wilberforce must
also cope with his own poor health and an inadvertent addiction to morphine
(which was commonly administered by doctors, and the addictive properties of
which were unknown at the time).
There is little
content of concern in Amazing Grace. The opening scene of the film shows
a worker whipping his horse. Wilberforce (who was also founder of the Society of
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) stops the beating and explains that if the
owner lets the horse rest, he will get the performance he needs from the animal.
Amazing Grace pulls no punches in describing the brutality and inhumanity
of slavery. While actual slave conditions are not shown they are described in
detail. These descriptions may offend some viewers and disturb young or
sensitive children.
For its positive
messages and exploration of a significant aspect of history, the Parents
Television Council is proud to award Amazing Grace the PTC Seal of
ApprovalTM. The PTC does not recommend this film for viewers
under age 10.
