Filmed by the
creators of the Emmy-winning Discovery Channel series Planet Earth, Earth
continues the tradition of Disney’s “True-Life Adventure” series by showcasing
the drama and beauty of the animal kingdom and the natural world. From a family
of polar bears in the frigid arctic, to a herd of elephants crossing the desert,
to a humpback whale in the ocean – and with many side-trips to view birds,
monkeys and many other animals, as well as panoramic views of rain forests and
the sweeping vistas of the Himalayas – Earth is by turns touching,
humorous and inspirational as it shows the tremendous beauty of our common home.
There is no content
of concern to parents in Earth. Several scenes showcase the natural cycle
of predator and victim: a wolf chases down a young caribou; a hungry polar bear
attempts (and fails) to make a meal of a walrus; an amazing scene filmed in
infrared shows a pride of lions attacking an elephant; and a cheetah outruns and
tackles a gazelle and a killer shark devours a seal, both in stunning
slow-motion. However, no blood or suffering is seen, and the victim animals’
deaths are not shown. Rather, the attacks are presented matter-of-factly as
being just another part of the natural world. There are also a few subtle
messages in the narration about the negative impact of climate change; but one
need not subscribe to the theory of man-made global warming to appreciate the
spectacular photography in this film, which shows the beauty of God’s creation.
With its brilliant
photography, gentle narration and poignant vignettes inherent in nature,
Disney’s Earth is a magnificent way to celebrate Earth Day – and a
perfect way to introduce children to the beauty and drama of the natural world.
The Parents Television Council is proud to award Earth the PTC Seal of
ApprovalTM, and recommends this film for all viewers over the age
of five.
