This
“reimagined” version of the iconic science-fiction TV show tells the story of
young rebel-turned-starship officer James T. Kirk. When Nero, an alien from an
alternate future bent on destroying whole planets, invades the Federation, Kirk
must learn to work with stoic Vulcan officer Spock to stop Nero’s plan. Along
the way, Kirk assembles his team of familiar characters and assumes command of
his famous ship, the U.S.S. Enterprise – as well as encountering another
familiar face also from the future…
Star Trek
contains a large amount of intense sci-fi style violence, along with some less
fantasy-oriented as well. In addition to the expected scenes of spaceships
firing rayguns, crashes, explosions, chases with alien monsters and the like,
there are also intense fist- and sword-fights. Kirk is beaten bloody by multiple
assailants in a bar brawl, and Spock nearly strangles him to death. Kirk’s
commanding officer is tortured by Nero, having an insect shoved down his throat,
and other torture is implied. Kirk and other crewmen also fight and duel alien
soldiers on several occasions. Entire planets are destroyed, with some of the
devastation shown.
Language is also intense, with at
least one use of the s-word, and multiple uses of the other words noted above.
Kirk flirts with every woman who crosses his path, and is seen thrashing around
in bed with a green-skinned alien woman, both wearing underwear. Uhura also
strips to her underwear, and exchanges several kisses with another crewman.
Early in the movie Kirk and Uhura drink in a bar as they flirt; during a bar
brawl, Kirk falls against Uhura, groping her breasts. Dr. McCoy also injects
Kirk with various medications having bizarre side effects, though this is played
for laughs.
Loud, unsubtle and possessing little
of the heart or morality of the classic TV series, Star Trek will likely
be wildly popular with the same teens who have made programs like Gossip Girl
top hits; but its adult language and intense action verging on violence make it
inappropriate for young viewers. The Parents Television Council does not
recommend Star Trek for children under age 13.
