Sophie is frustrated. She and her fiancé Victor are on a romantic getaway to Italy, but all the food-obsessed Victor wants to do is meet with suppliers for his start-up restaurant. Then Sophie discovers the “secretaries of Juliet” – a group of ladies who answer letters from the lovelorn left at the spot where Juliet (of Romeo and) was reputed to live. Sophie finds a letter written 50 years ago and answers it, encouraging the elderly Claire to seek out her first love. To Sophie’s surprise Claire comes to Italy with her churlish grandson Charles, and the three of them are launched into a whirlwind search for Claire’s lost love, Lorenzo. Along the way, Claire’s quest causes Sophie to reexamine her own romantic choices. Will Claire – and Sophie – find love and happiness?

There is practically no content of concern in Letters to Juliet. Several kisses are exchanged among various characters, and the “secretaries of Juliet” refer in passing to people making love. One disgruntled man gives the trio the finger for bothering him. All of the characters are seen drinking wine as part of their stay in Italy’s vineyard country, but none drinks to excess.

Letters to Juliet is a romantic tale of old loves lost and new ones found, of understanding and sympathy and, most of all, of the importance and joy of love. The beautiful Italian locations are set off by a soundtrack filled with songs of all eras praising romance. The movie is sweet without being cloying, and is sure to be a hit with lovers of romance, teen and adult alike.

For showing that romance need not equal sexual promiscuity, and that love can be found in old age as well as among the young, Letters to Juliet has been awarded the PTC Seal of ApprovalTM. While the movie is appropriate for all ages, it may be of limited interest to viewers under age 12.
