Tangled
retells the legend of Rapunzel, with minor alterations: kidnapped at birth, the
Princess Rapunzel is imprisoned in a tower by the repulsively evil Gothel, who
poses as her mother and keeps Rapunzel secret in order to have sole control of
Rapunzel’s magical hair, which can heal any wound and keeps Gothel eternally
young. But the princess longs to escape, and seizes her chance when
inadvertently discovered by the rougish thief Flynn Ryder. Alternately aided and
abetted by Gothel, Flynn’s former compatriots the Stabbington brothers, a band
of comic thugs, and the intelligent horse Maximus, Flynn and Rapunzel return to
civilization…but will they be able to overcome the seeds of dissent and
suspicion sewn by Gothel, and return Rapunzel to her royal heritage?
There is no profanity or sexual content in Tangled. There
is, however, much stylized action – so much so, the movie could almost be
retitled, “Rapunzel: Action Hero.” This varies from humorous slapstick (Rapunzel
repeatedly whacks Flynn unconscious with a frying pan), to breath-taking
animated stunts (Flynn and Rapunzel are swept away from a collapsing dam in a
cascade of water), to slightly grimmer moments (Gothel stabs Flynn with a
dagger, drawing blood).

Themes in the film also run the gamut, from Rapunzel learning that
each member of a barbarian horde has a secret “dream” (like becoming a mime or
an interior decorator), to Rapunzel’s desire to escape from her domineering
“mother” Gothel (who repeatedly warns her about the horrors of the outside world
and incessantly tells her “mother knows best.”) In the Disney/Pixar tradition,
there are adventures, songs, humorous sentient animal sidekicks, a
pop-culture-referencing rogue, and messages about leaving home, growing up, and
following your dreams.
Tangled
is a safe and fun animated film from the always-reliable Disney, ideal for
children and families. Because of this, the Parents Television Council awards
Tangled the PTC Seal of ApprovalTM. The PTC does not
recommend this movie for viewers under age five.
