Alex and Emma
By Beth Reynolds
Alex and Emma
(PG-13), a new film opening Friday seems to have all the elements that I look
for in a good romantic comedy. The pairing of popular stars Kate Hudson and Luke
Wilson is a match made in Hollywood heaven. Add the proven talents of director
Rob Reiner, and this movie should be a funny and delightful summer romp.
The movie
intertwines two working plots. The first, involves Alex (Luke Wilson), a writer
with a terrible case of writers' block in money trouble with a Cuban loan
shark. His plan to secure a cash advance from his publisher (Rob Reiner) to pay
the loan shark, leads him to hiring Emma (Kate Hudson), a staid and boring court
stenographer. He hopes her quick transcribing skills will better help him pen a
novel in less than 30 days. As the days pass the pair slowly realize they have
fallen in love.
The second
storyline set in the 1920s depicts the characters (played by Hudson and
Wilson) in Alex's novel as they meander in and out of romantic entanglements.
Ultimately, both pairs of star-crossed lovers Alex and Emma, as well as his
fictional characters come to understand that true love is found when you
recognize the value of substance over style.
While most of the
film is free of inappropriate material, two sexually graphic scenes stand out as
beacons against the otherwise clean content. One incident contains a very
graphic reference to male genitalia. Later, in an even more egregious sequence,
the characters of Alex's novel are depicted consumed in a lengthy lovemaking
session. In true Hollywood style, these graphic elements do nothing to enhance
the movie or advance the plot, and seem only like the director's gratuitous
afterthoughts. Because of these two scenes, Alex and Emma is
inappropriate for a young PG-13 audience.
Don't let the
PG-13 rating fool you due to the graphic nature of a few scenes, this film is
appropriate for only mature, older teens. Fortunately for parents, the plot and
mature storyline should not attract younger teens.
