The beloved
animated brothers Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, finally grace the big screen
nearly fifty years after Ross Bagdasarian Sr. created them. Staying true to
their original characters, the computer generated Chipmunks take the world by
storm with their musical talent in this family friendly flick that highlights
the value of togetherness over vanity.
The story
starts from the very beginning when the three chipmunks leave the forest and by
chance find themselves at Dave Seville’s house. Dave, a struggling songwriter,
is frightened when he discovers three speaking chipmunks in his house, but when
he learns of their ability to sing he welcomes them into his life. Dave is
lenient with their rambunctious behavior because of their value to his music
career. Singing Dave’s songs, including the famous “Christmas Don’t Be Late,”
the brothers rise to the status of national celebrities. Dave’s villainous
friend and record executive Ian makes big plans for the Chipmunks against Dave’s
wishes. A cliché miscommunication between Dave and the Chipmunks causes their
“family” to divide and Dave must go on the search to rescue them from Ian’s
plans to exploit them.
Caution Cones
for Parents:
Alvin and the
Chipmunks is a very clean and family friendly movie. However, a few language
and sexual innuendo concerns have kept if from receiving our Seal of Approval. The words “loser,” “stupid,” and “sucks” are used several times as well as a
taunt from one of the Chipmunks to “kiss my furry cheeks.” In one scene Alvin
screams “holy nuts” and in another he tells Dave that a girl “wanted him”
(sexually is implied). Finally, during a photoshoot a photographer says to the
brothers “make love to the camera,” and “spank the booty.”
Aside from
these issues Alvin and the Chipmunks is a cute and uplifting story about the
importance and value of togetherness and family. The entire family can enjoy
this film.
