A few brief kisses between high school-age characters, with a clear romantic physical tension between the main characters throughout the movie.

Some heated and angry arguments between the main characters; Materialistic, self-absorbed and conniving behavior by the Sharpay Evans character

This Friday marks the premiere of the latest installment of Disney’s mega-hit franchise, High School Musical. Rather than being released on Disney’s flagship cable network, High School Musical 3: Senior Year will be released in movie theaters across the country. The Parents Television Council is thrilled to recommend HSM3 to parents and families as a delightful family-friendly film, and is honored to award HSM3 with the coveted PTC Seal of ApprovalTM .

The HSM ensemble cast returns for the main characters’ senior year of high school. While the familiar conflicts and challenges from earlier films continue to be present (mean girl versus nice girl, star athlete struggling with his priorities, and of course the group’s preparation for the next big musical performance), HSM3 also offers a touching look at the fear, excitement, apprehension, anticipation and uncertainty that comes with a life-changing event like high school graduation.

The film’s music is every bit as enjoyable as the first and second High School Musical movies.  And the dancing is extraordinary, covering everything from ballroom to Broadway to urban-contemporary. The positive themes of family, friends, integrity and following one’s heart are ever-present and beautifully portrayed. And frankly, from this parent’s perspective at least, these themes never seem to grow old.

What a joy it would be if other Hollywood studios could take a page from Disney’s playbook and produce such entertaining fare without resorting to gratuitous profanity, innuendo or bodily-function jokes that often ruin a film or TV show for families with young children. That is why I urge parents and families to support this film and others like it at the box office. Doing so will send a message to Hollywood that families want to see films that are free from inappropriate content.

There is no violence or profanity in High School Musical 3. The two main characters are portrayed in an innocent and loving relationship that includes kissing, but there is no content that should be of concern even for the most cautious or sensitive parents.

If you enjoyed the first two High School Musical movies, you will certainly enjoy the third. I know I did -- but then, I’ve been waiting 14 months to see it!

The DVD of High School Musical 3 also contains several bonus features, including deleted scenes; bloopers; a “music and more” feature that allows the viewer to sing along with the songs in the movie, or hear the soundtrack separately; “backstage” features highlighting the choreography of the “prom” scene, the making of the cast’s prom dresses, and the cast’s goodbyes during the “graduation” scene; and ads for other Disney DVDs and movies.
