Teen idol and Hannah Montana
star Miley Cyrus appears in her first dramatic role in The Last Song, a
movie written by acclaimed romance novelist Nicholas Sparks, author of The
Notebook, Message in a Bottle, and Nights in Rodanthe. Miley plays
Ronnie Miller, a musically brilliant but troubled teenage girl. Forced to spend
the summer with her father, whom she still resents for divorcing her mother,
Ronnie meets an attractive teenager named Will. This relationship opens Ronnie
to growth in other parts of her life; and over the course of time, Ronnie
gradually learns to love…and to forgive.
There is very little problematic
content in The Last Song. Ronnie and Will share several kisses, and
Ronnie briefly pads her chest while trying on a dress. Another boy makes a
drunken pass at Ronnie, but she repulses him. Will gets in a fistfight with
another boy over Ronnie’s affections. Language is limited to a few uses of the
words mentioned above. Because of her anger over her parents’ divorce, Ronnie is
initially insensitive and rude to others, including her father and Will. She
also bribes her little brother Jonah to lie and keep their father away from her,
and admits to a previous shoplifting arrest. One girl shoplifts and plants the
stolen merchandise on Ronnie in order to get her into trouble, and various other
girls make catty remarks to Ronnie about her father and her relationship with
Will. Will is also complicit in covering up wrongdoing by one of his friends,
but they both eventually admit their guilt.
Miley Cyrus acquits herself well in
her first adult role, bringing a realistic mix of tenderness and insensitivity
to the character of Ronnie. Greg Kinnear is also notable as Ronnie’s
long-suffering and penitent father, who taught her how to play music; and Bobby
Coleman is a delight in the role of Ronnie’s younger brother Jonah. Filled with
the pathos and romance of young love, and carrying an important message about
acceptance and forgiveness, The Last Song makes an excellent first step
into adulthood for Miley Cyrus…but because of some of the content, the PTC does
not recommend this movie for children under age 10.
