Ray Barone, his wife Debra, and their three children live on Long Island across the street from Ray's overbearing parents. Ray's mother constantly criticizes Debra's housekeeping and mothering skills while Ray tries to keep peace between the two women. His curmudgeonly father and melodramatic brother, Robert and his new wife, Amy, further complicate the family dynamic.
The series provides a comical but positive view of family life. Raymond promotes the idea of long-lasting marriage, and Debra feels fulfilled in her role as a stay-at-home mom. Language on this series, used to be harsh, but since the first of 2004, has dropped to a record low number of just 8 uses of mild “hell,” “crap,” and “damn” in 6 episodes. Sexual references have been non-existent since January 2004. Due to the reduction in foul language and the disappearance of sexual references, both have been downgraded to green ratings. Violence continues not to be a problem for this series.
