This spin-off of The Practice stars James Spader as the ethically challenged attorney Alan Shore. Shore’s unconventional way of practicing law is matched by one of the partners at his new firm, Denny Crane (played by William Shatner). Crane is a legend in Boston law, and he knows it. However, it appears that recently he has become less predictable and perhaps a danger to the firm. Joining Crane and Shore in the practice, is Shirley Scmidt, Denny’s old flame and a strong, confident woman. Carl Sack is newly imported from New York, and his abrasive personality ruffles some feathers, especially Denny’s. Katie Lloyd, another new lawyer, bonds with Jerry Espenson, a lawyer who struggles with Asperger’s Syndrome.
Offensive sexual content is the show’s primary concern. Denny Crane in particular makes many jokes of a sexual nature. There are also scenes of implied sexual activity, and more serious discussion of sexually-related elements (such as rape) in courtroom proceedings. In addition, one episode deals with the storyline of a 15-year old girl who contracts HIV during unprotected sex and wants the school to take some of the blame for inaccurate information about condoms.
Language is not as common, with occasional utterances of “damn,” “hell,” and “piss” as well as infrequent mentions of “ass,” and “bitch.”
Violence is not common, but there are often flashbacks to death scenes during a trial, and such content (which includes strangulation and firing a gun) is somewhat graphic.
Boston Legal is not recommended for children of any age.
