Patrick Jane is “The Mentalist,” a former celebrity psychic and consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation. Patrick is not psychic, though, he has a sharp eye for details and reading people. He uses his observational genius and charm to help the CBI clear high-profile murder cases. He’s something of a loose cannon, and in spite of his help, his boss, Teresa Lisbon has no affection for Patrick’s lack of playing by traditional law enforcement rules. Other members of Teresa’s team include Kimball Cho, Wayne Rigsby, and Grace Van Pelt, who are starry eyed where Patrick is concerned, especially since he has an uncanny ability to pick killers out of the list of suspects. Jane’s motivation for joining the CBI is to find the serial killer, Red John, who killed his wife and child. At the end of the past season, the team got closer to finding Red John, but he eluded them again. Patrick suffers from knowing he is close to catching his family’s murderer but can’t quite do it.
The Mentalist contains a fair amount of adult content. Foul language used includes the words “screw,” “crap,” “bastard,” “son of a bitch,” “damn,” and “jackass.” Sexual content has included dialogue about adultery described as “banging your wife like a big bass drum,” and a middle aged man having an affair with a 15 year old girl. Violence is graphic; there were scenes of dead bodies in pools of blood, a person to beat to death with a golf club, a teenage girl found dead by a young child, a man’s body buried in cement with just his nose showing, a plot about kidnappers who murder their victims, and a woman shooting a man at point blank range, blood spurting from his chest wounds. In a recent episode, a victim was shown after being eviscerated by a rotary jewelry saw. In another, a man was shot at point blank with large bloody wounds on his chest.
The Mentalist is not recommended for viewers under age 18.
