Modern Family takes a look at American families through the eyes of three different families. Phil and Claire have three children with whom they strive to have open and honest relationships. Phil boasts that he is the ‘cool dad’ who uses text messaging and email. Cameron and Mitchell are the proud new fathers of an adopted baby girl. Jay is a man in a mid-life crisis who has married a much younger woman with an 11-year-old son. The catch is that all of these families are related. Jay is the father of Claire and Mitchell.
The sexual content in this series consists primarily of innuendo and mild references to sex. When Phil & Claire’s teenaged daughter Haley has her first boy over, Claire drops laundry off in Haley’s room and very purposefully leaves the door open, explaining that when she was young, she had a similar experience: “One minute you’re just friends watching Falcon Crest and the next minute you’re lying under the air hockey table with your bra in your pocket.” Violence was moderate: Phil & Claire’s daughter Alex complains to her parents that her younger brother Luke has shot her with a plastic BB gun. As punishment, Phil & Claire agree that Phil should shoot Luke with the plastic BB gun. Phil is about to shoot Luke when he decides against it, but then the gun discharges automatically three time, shooting Luke, Phil, and a friend of his daughter’s. Language is also of moderate concern and included unbleeped words such as “damn”, “bitch”, “hell”, and “jackass”.
Modern Family is not recommended for viewers under the age of 14.
