A gay couple, ob-gyn David and TV producer Brian, decide to conceive and raise a child. Goldie, who left Ohio with her nine-year-old daughter, Shania, after finding her husband with another woman. With the surrogacy money, Goldie’s determined to improve her family’s future, which includes being free from Nana, Goldie’s bigoted grandmother. However, Nana will do anything to ruin the surrogacy plans. Also in the mix is Brian’s sassy black assistant Rocky, who will not hesitate to put Nana in her place.. The program follows the trials and tribulations of family life.
Sexual content dominates The New Normal. The first episode included a shot of a woman’s cleavage as she had sex with Clay. Other sexual content has included Nana finding Shania and a nine-year-old boy kissing in the coatroom at school, causing Nana to take the kids to Planned Parenthood to get birth control. There are also frequent references to sex and genitalia, such as the nine-year-old boy discussing masturbation. Language included uses of “fag,” “ass,” and “hell.” In addition, Nana’s dialogue often contains explicit slurs against homosexuals, blacks, Asians, Hispanics, Jews, and the handicapped. Violence is not a problem for the series.
The New Normal is not recommended for viewers under age 18.
