The
concept behind DOAXBV
is that Zack, a male character from the
Dead or Alive games,
won the Dead or Alive 3
tournament. He took his winnings to a casino, bet it all, and won
big. So Zack buys an island and tells all the girls from
DOA3 that he is holding
the Dead or Alive 4
tournament on his island. Once all the girls arrive, they find
out there is no tournament after all, and no other men on the
island. The girls decide to have a 14 day vacation where they
play volleyball, shop, and lounge around on the beach. As the
player, you pick a girl to play and you decide what to do
throughout the day. In the morning, you can play volleyball (if
you have a partner), hang out by the pool, play the pool-hopping
game where you jump across platforms floating in the water, go to
any of the shops, give gifts to the other girls, or just hang out
by yourself. At night, you can send gifts to the girls, look at
your own collection of gifts, or hit the casino where you can play
blackjack, roulette, poker, or slots. In order to beat the game,
all you have to do is play through the 14 game days and your
vacation ends.
This game is more
of a collection of mini-games, none of which are very compelling.
You do not have to play volleyball at all. Volleyball is the best
way to make money, and the point of the game is make money and
shop for yourself and the other girls. There is a social side to
the game, as you have to give gifts to the other girls in order
for them to like you. The point of the game is really to give and
receive gifts and collect as many different swimsuits and items as
you can. DOAXBV is
extremely voyeuristic. If you go to a secluded section of the
island, your female avatar will lie in the sand, play in the surf,
or do stretching exercises. At this point, the camera pans around
them and the player can switch views or zoom in to get a better
look at the girl. This is the reason the game carries an M
rating, because you are basically playing a peeping tom. The
gambling probably plays a part in the M rating as well, but at
least it teaches the lesson that "the more you play the more you
lose". I've never seen a blackjack dealer get so many 20s.
DOAXBV
is certainly an impressive technology demo, but I found the
gameplay to come up short. The volleyball is overly simplistic
and the collecting and gift giving just did not interest me. This
game receives an M-rating and is not appropriate for young
players, so if you're considering buying this game for a child,
don't. This is a game for adults. The game features gambling, a
lot of sexual innuendo, and encourages voyeurism and ogling. It
will not do much to teach your young son not to stare at or objectify
women.
