A pair of swans establish a nest on the pond on widower Jack Peterson’s property. When the mother swan dies, Jack’s daughter Frankie takes the eggs with the intention of raising them herself, and calls government ornithologist Ginny Newsom for advice. But the starchy Ginny confiscates the eggs and gets off on the wrong foot with Jack – especially when she returns with the hatchlings and informs him that she intends to set up camp on his property to acclimate them to nature. Frankie and Ginny grow close, bonding over Frankie’s need for a mother and their mutual love of birds. Soon, Ginny is part of the family…but when the birds move off on their migration she follows them, breaking Frankie (and Jack’s) heart. But when Frankie decides to follow the birds also, she becomes lost in the wilderness – leading both Jack and Ginny to search for her, and reevaluate what each truly finds important. Another in the classic Hallmark Hall of Fame series, Away & Back combines beautiful photography, a love of nature, and a low-key romance in this story of a young girl coming of age. The program contains no content to concern parents, and its gentle mood and timeless story about love, loss, hope, and nature will touch the hearts of parents and children alike. Because of its emphasis on family-friendly values, the Parents Television Council is proud to award Away & Back with the PTC Seal of Approval®. The PTC recommends this movie for viewers over age five.
