Last Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Craig Zadan and Neil Meron – the producers of this year’s controversial Oscar award telecast -- have been signed to produce the Oscars
again next year.
At this year’s Oscars, Zadan and Meron asked Seth MacFarlane – creator of the Fox broadcast network’s raunchy Sunday-night cartoons
Family Guy and
American Dad – to host the awards. MacFarlane turned the previously staid and tasteful ceremony into an excuse to
deluge viewers with misogyny, racism, anti-Semitism, and sex jokes about a nine-year-old girl – and the producers were delighted, applauding MacFarlane’s bigotry as “satire” and claiming anyone who didn’t enjoy it “missed the joke.”
This week, rumors began circulating that Zadan and Meron had invited MacFarlane to host again next year. The fact that, even after outraging millions and being condemned by everyone from
Jane Fonda to the Jewish
Anti-Defamation League, the producers even contemplated asking MacFarlane back tells Americans everything they need to know about Hollywood: that it is utterly contemptuous of the sensibilities of disadvantaged groups and decent people. One is left to wonder: in MacFarlane’s absence, who WILL Zadan and Meron ask to host? David Duke? Larry Flynt?
