nd, top TV producer Mark Burnett won an Emmy award for his program
The Voice. During his acceptance speech, Burnett also made several keen observations about the state of television today.
Mark Burnett is one of the top success stories in television. Famed as creator/producer of
Survivor, Burnett also created and produced
The Apprentice, The Voice, and the wildly popular History Channel mini-series
The Bible.
When discussing his successes in Hollywood, Burnett has been adamant – and outspoken – about the fact that he is dedicated to making shows families can watch together. Earlier this year, Burnett told
TV Guide, “I only make family-friendly programming, and it’s worked out pretty well for me.”
The producer
repeated those sentiments after
The Voice won this year’s Emmy for Best Reality Competition Series. Burnett noted that The Voice has “a kind format…There’s no humiliation. People said these shows would never work without humiliation, and that’s not true. Americans love kindness and great music.” (This is in stark contrast to Fox’s
American Idol, which in the early part of each season delights in humiliating aspiring competitors, and which is laden with nasty, sarcastic commentary from its judges.)
