The Parents Television Council called streaming service Vudu’s announcement that it will provide viewers with content filtering a “win for families.”“Just when the Hollywood studios’ chokehold on content filtering looked to be fatal, family-friendly Walmart has swooped in like Superman to save the day. We are beyond thrilled to see that the retailer’s streaming video platform, Vudu, has announced its new Family Play offering that will allow families to filter – instantly to skip past – explicit content in hundreds of major movie titles. Parents will have vastly greater control over the entertainment content their children are able to watch, just as they should. The studios will enjoy access to a larger marketplace, because consumers who would not otherwise purchase a film with concerning content will now be able to do so. This is a win for families, a win for content filtering and, simultaneously, a win for the entertainment industry’s revenue stream,” said PTC President Tim Winter.“Disney, Warner Brothers and Fox have attempted to obliterate content filtering innovators, like VidAngel, through suffocating legal maneuvers in Hollywood-friendly courts. This exciting new development resets the entire filtering landscape. It proves that there is a viable marketplace for content filtering, and we hope it propels every video streaming service provider to adopt content filtering technology. Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and Apple: are you listening?“We applaud Walmart, Vudu and ClearPlay for their collaborative efforts to delivering the ultimate in parental control to streaming video. And we hope it is just the first such service with many more to come.”
