PTC Mourns Passing of Mary Tyler Moore

The beloved actress Mary Tyler Moore passed away this week. After starring as housewife Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show from 1961 to 1966, she went on to even greater success from 1970 to 1977 in her own series The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Ms. Moore and Mr. Van Dyke were the perfect example of a Kennedy-era young, progressive couple in her first program, while on Mary Tyler Moore, she defined the ideal of the intelligent, single career woman at the beginning of the feminist movement. Audiences responded to Ms. Moore in both roles, and so did the entertainment industry. Ms. Moore received a total of six Emmy Awards: one for The Dick Van Dyke Show, four as the star of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and the last for the 1993 made-for-TV movie Stolen Babies. She was also nominated for an Oscar for her role in the 1980 film Ordinary People. "Mary Tyler Moore was an attractive, intelligent, and charming actress who always brought class to any production with which she was associated. Her roles as Laura Petrie and Mary Richards were iconic, in two of the finest programs ever to air on television. And notably, both series were family-friendly – proving that television doesn’t need graphic and gratuitous content to be funny, intelligent, or successful,” said PTC President Tim Winter.
