The following was written by Dean Batali, lead writer for That '70s Show and former writer for Buffy the Vampire Slayer [Behind the Screen, a book about Christians in Hollywood]
"The first step is to understand that TV is just a delivery system for ads. The only programming that really matters to those in power is the commercials (except on pay cable channels like HBO, where nothing matters except how many people subscribe).
The success of a show is not measured by how good it is, or who says they loved it, or even how many people watch.
A show is a success if the people who watched it go and buy the products that were advertised during the commercials.
It is all about what is being sold and (just as important) who is doing the buying. That is why shows like 7th Heaven - which was the highest rated show on the WB network for years - was never considered as much of a success as Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Dawson's Creek, two lower-rated shows on the same network. The perception was that the audience for the latter two shows had more money to spend, so advertising rates were higher, and therefore the shows were more profitable.
It might not seem fair, but viewers need to understand that the most-watched shows aren't always considered the most financially successful."
We often say that what TV shows advertisers spend their money is a reflection of their corporate values. As consumers, where we shop is also a reflection of our values.
When you’re doing your Christmas shopping, let your values be your guide. The Parents Television Council’s (PTC) list of "Best and Worst Advertisers" shows which companies have sponsored safe, family-friendly TV shows, and which have not. I encourage you to take these brands into consideration when you’re making purchases for your family, at Christmastime and beyond.
By “voting with your wallet,” you are supporting the companies that make programming safe for your children or grandchildren, and also sending a message to the companies that are helping to underwrite some of the worst content on television.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY: Companies actively striving to maintain a family-friendly advertising policy.
NEED ENCOURAGEMENT: Companies that need encouragement to incorporate better standards in advertising policy.
Advertisers, along with network executives, are the key decision-makers in Hollywood, and they decide what options you'll have in television programming. With your help, the PTC will convince them to consider the wants and needs of the family viewing audience. Help us urge them to restore the "Family Hour" and clean up prime-time television.

Name the show, tell them if you approve or disapprove of it, give your reasons why, say if you will or will not watch the show, tell them you are contacting the network and your local network affiliate as well, and say you support the efforts of the Parents Television Council.
