LOS ANGELES (March 10, 2025) – The Parents Television and Media Council (PTC) called on Hollywood to create more family-friendly programming, in light of a new studyby WildBrain that found sharing video content together is one of the most significant ways families bond, third only to mealtime and travel. This is particularly true for Gen Z and Millennial parents: 71% of Gen Z parents and 61% of Millennial parents watch content with their kids at least once a day.
“On the heels of the Oscars’ Best Picture winner being an un-family-friendly film that glamorizes prostitution, Hollywood needs a wakeup call to create films and TV programs that cater to families. The new study by WildBrain confirms that families want opportunities to bond over video content, and this is too important for Hollywood to overlook. Right now, families struggle to find content that’s safe for multiple generations to bond over,” said Melissa Henson, vice president, Parents Television and Media Council.
“The WildBrain findings highlight that spending time together watching shows, movies, or gaming is central to family connections. Previous surveys have also indicated that families who watch TV together feel a stronger sense of connection,” Henson said.
A separate study of school-aged children (ages 6-17) found that 73% of American kids actually want more opportunities to bond with their families.
“But Hollywood hasn’t prioritized family-friendly content in years, instead catering to niche audiences with explicit content. Hollywood must stop ignoring families and work to draw them in instead of alienating them. Families want that time to bond together over family-friendly video content,” Henson said.
