PTC Denounces Hollywood Foreign Press Association for Honoring Producer of ‘Darkest, Most Explicit’ TV Programming with ‘Carol Burnett Award’

LOS ANGELES (December 19, 2022) – The Parents Television and Media Council denounced the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for its decision to honor producer Ryan Murphy with “Carol Burnett Award” at the Golden Globes.

“Is it April Fool's Day 2.0? Is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association really about to bestow an award named for Carol Burnett on Ryan Murphy, who publicly suggested that a rear-entry sex scene on broadcast television might be his legacy? It is beyond vexing, beyond incomprehensible, that a man who trades on graphic debauchery and sexual, violent darkness would even be mentioned in the same sentence as a beloved national treasure like Carol Burnett - someone who for decades has brought light and laughter to countless millions around the world,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

“We denounce the HFPA for 'honoring' the producer of the darkest, most twisted, and most explicit programming in television history with an award named for someone who has embodied only boundless joy. HFPA’s own words say the ‘Carol Burnett Award’ is about the impact on audiences. When we look at what Ryan Murphy’s impact is compared to Carol Burnett’s impact: they are polar opposites. The HFPA has rightfully come under intense scrutiny in recent years for its actions (and inactions), and this decision only underscores its self-inflicted worthlessness.”
