LOS ANGELES (April 20, 2023) – The Parents Television and Media Council (PTC) said that the re-introduction of the EARN IT Act is crucial for children and urged Congress to pass this bill and other solutions to further protect children from harm online.

The EARN IT Act would ensure that technology platforms protect children from child sexual abuse material.

“Congress must prioritize child protection, and the EARN IT Act re-introduction is a tremendous first step towards accomplishing that goal this year. The EARN IT Act helps to clarify that technology platforms must confront child sexual abuse material on their sites,” said Melissa Henson, vice president of the Parents Television and Media Council.

“As entertainment programming that prominently features child characters has grown increasingly sexually explicit and depraved, and when children are portrayed to be sexually available to adults on screen, it is reasonable to believe that is an underlying cause for child sexual abuse material to have increased exponentially in society.

“We are grateful to Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and U.S. Reps. Ann Wagner (R-MO) and Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) for their leadership on EARN IT.

“We urge Congress to pass the EARN IT Act and to also re-introduce the Kids Online Safety Act and other solutions to protect children online,” Henson said.
