PTC: YouTube’s New Ad Guidelines are a Small Measure of Reassurance to Families

LOS ANGELES (January 19, 2023) – The Parents Television and Media Council (PTC) commended YouTube for its new advertising guidelines that serve to demonetize video content with sex, violence, and profanity.

“We commend YouTube for its new amplified advertising policies that demonetize video content with sex, violence, and profanity. We hope YouTube will continue to implement policies to better protect children from harmful content and to discourage bad actors,” said Melissa Henson, vice president of the Parents Television and Media Council.

“Kids are overwhelmingly watching online video – YouTube in particular. While YouTube’s new advertising policies are a step in the right direction, explicit or graphic content is still able to be used in videos after the first 8 seconds without being demonetized.

“The reality is YouTube is still a Wild West when it comes to children, and parents should carefully monitor what their children watch on YouTube, to the fullest extent possible.”
