LOS ANGELES (June 13, 2025) – The Parents Television and Media Council (PTC) commended the Minnesota Legislature for passing the first social media warning label bill, expected to be signed into law. The bill requires that a prominent mental health warning be displayed each time the platform is accessed.
“Social media can have harmful effects on users – particularly children and teens – and this bill ensures that a warning label will be seen by every user. Minnesota is wise to pass this social media warning label law,” said Melissa Henson, vice president, Parents Television and Media Council.
Former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called for warning labels on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents.
“Children are experiencing a plethora of online harms caused by powerful algorithms that target them, by predators who seek to entice them, and ultimately, from tech companies that seek to market to them. Until Big Tech takes accountability for protecting children, elected officials must act to protect children,” Henson said.
“We are seeing many laudable state efforts to address and confront the harm social media can have on youth. Utah, Georgia, New York, Florida, Virginia, and Texas are among the states that have introduced or enacted laws that deal with social media harms on children.”
