U.S. Senate Must Reject AI Moratorium Provision in Budget Bill

LOS ANGELES (May 27, 2025) – The Parents Television and Media Council (PTC) called on the U.S. Senate to reject a provision in the budget bill that puts a moratorium on state-level bills and current laws on Artificial Intelligence.

“It is appalling that this AI moratorium provision is in the current budget bill, as it’s clearly a Big Tech handout. The U.S. Senate should reject this provision outright. AI can harm our children to degrees we can’t even yet imagine,” said Melissa Henson, vice president, Parents Television and Media Council.

Meta recently released its AI chatbot that can engage in sexually explicit conversations with children. Character.AI said it would change how teen users are able to interact after lawsuits were filed alleging its chatbots interacted inappropriately with minors.

“Big Tech’s MO is to release its products into the public without any safeguards and we see the detrimental effects on our children from social media use. Big Tech prioritizes profits over protecting our children every single time and does not deserve blanket protection from legal liability for any harm their products might cause," said Henson.
