Keeping Your Apple Products Family-Friendly

As smart phones go, Apple products have often been considered to be one of, if not the most family-friendly brand on the market. In response to a customer complaint that “Apple’s role isn’t moral police,” co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs replied, “We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone. Folks who want porn can buy an Android” [a competing brand of mobile phone]. And in a previous statement, Jobs told technology reporters, “You know, there's a porn store for Android. You can download nothing but porn. You can download porn. Your kids can download porn. That's a place we don't want to go - so we're not going to go there." Apple products have been so reliable in that regard, that many schools encourage the use of the Apple iPad in the classroom. Recently, however, the PTC received a copy of a letter distributed to the parents of students in one Colorado school district, informing them that upon installing Apple’s latest software upgrade, iOS 7, internet filters allowing for safe web browsing when away from school, were effectively removed. According to Internet safety expert Mary Kay Hoal, iOS 7 gives parents more direct control over the child's web browsing. "The biggest change in iOS7 is the ability to set specific limitations on web browsing with the Safari app. It used to be that if you wanted a safe and age-appropriate web browsing experience for your child or teen , you had to install a 3rd party safe web browser like Ranger Browser and then restrict Safari altogether. Now you can be very specific about the sites that your child or teen has access to on their iPhone, iPod or iPad."
