PTC Applauds New Disney+ Streaming Platform, But Suggests Parental Controls Are Needed

LOS ANGELES (November 12, 2019) – The Parents Television Council applauded the new streaming service, Disney+, for crafting a much safer platform than most other streaming services, but after reviewing the platform, called on Disney to add content filtering and parental controls.“Disney+ is an 80% streaming solution for families, and we applaud the company for its focus on making family-friendly content,” said PTC President Tim Winter. “So far, the biggest challenge we see with Disney+ is that it does not include parental controls or content filtering. While the company has promised not to include R-rated content, by its own admission, Disney+ was not designed exclusively for children.”“Our recent research has shown that a PG-rating is not a guarantee that content is appropriate for younger audiences. The MPAA allows one or two ‘f-words’ in PG-13-rated movies. Even titles from Marvel and Star Wars franchises contain higher levels of violence, and some PG-13 titles may include harsher language or profanity, sexual innuendo or suggestive dialogue.
