Tim

President of the Parents Television and Media Council

With more than 30 years in broadcasting, cable, internet and new media technologies, along with a law degree, Tim Winter brings a wealth of experience to his position as president of the Parents Television and Media Council (PTC). The PTC is a non-partisan education organization advocating responsible entertainment.

He is passionate about protecting children from the harmful effects of graphic violence, sex, and profanity on children. He has been a fierce advocate for children and families during his 18+ year tenure at the PTC, frequently calling on the entertainment industry to be more responsible with the content it produces and markets to children. Mr. Winter has been fighting the growing trend of Hollywood’s sexualization of children in entertainment. To help combat negative and harmful representations of girls in the media, Mr. Winter helped launch the PTC’s “4 Every Girl” Campaign that advocates for healthier media images that value, respect, empower and promote the true value of every girl.

Mr. Winter spent 15 years with the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) serving in numerous management capacities for the media conglomerate in Los Angeles, New York and Europe. His work experience included network broadcast operations; program production; international and domestic cable; digital media; and the owned-and-operated television station, KNBC. He also participated in the creation of MSNBC, the cable and online news joint venture with Microsoft Corporation.

Mr. Winter worked at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), where he led the studio’s Interactive Division and its online and video game publishing ventures. He was also president and chief operating officer at FasTV, Inc., an internet media company. Prior to his work with the PTC, he was the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Desktop.TV, a high-tech media firm that delivered live-streamed broadcasts of business-oriented cable programming to the enterprise marketplace.

Mr. Winter started as executive director of the PTC in 2003 and took over as president in 2007 when the PTC’s founder and former president, Brent Bozell, stepped down.

Mr. Winter has testified before the Congress on the issues of media violence and media ownership consolidation; and before the Federal Communications Commission. He is a sought-after speaker and interview subject. He can often be seen on television news circuit, including CNN, MSNBC and Fox News; he is frequently cited by the nation’s leading newspapers such as USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and he is a regular source for numerous industry publications such as Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and Broadcasting & Cable.

Born and raised in northern Virginia, Mr. Winter graduated from Principia College with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He earned his Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and is a member of the State Bar of California. He served as a Commissioner of the Pasadena Community Access Corporation (Pasadena Media) for six years, including multiple years as its Treasurer. He and his wife reside in the Los Angeles, California, metropolitan area where they enjoy watching LA Kings Hockey and trying to play as much golf as they’re accused of.
