Families Benefit from ClearPlay’s New Offering to Filter Disney+ Content

LOS ANGELES (September 3, 2020) – The Parents Television Council welcomed the news that ClearPlay will offer content filtering for Disney+ streaming content, saying that this will benefit families who may not want their children to watch violence or other more adult content in Disney+ offerings.

“We applaud ClearPlay and Disney+ for reaching an agreement to give parents greater control over the content their families consume. Our research has shown that just because a content rating suggests a program is appropriate for children, that is often not the case. Even Disney+ allowed one ‘f-word’ into its release of PG-13-rated Hamilton, and families did not have the option to filter that word,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

“However, parents need to be the ultimate arbiters as to which programs can be filtered. This is why we continue to call for an update to the Family Movie Act, so that consumers – not Hollywood – can make the final decisions about content that may not be appropriate for their children to watch. The Family Movie Act – which allows families to filter explicit content from DVDs – needs to be updated so that the law can extend to contemporary streaming media platforms used by most Americans today.”
